Footage Shows Gaddafi's Bloodied Body

Libyans erupted in euphoria Thursday after longtime Libyan dictator Moammar Gadhafi was killed by revolutionary forces who were finally able to overrun his hometown. As news of his death swept through the country and across the world, bloody images of the 69-year-old tyrant slumped across the legs of a revolutionary fighter emerged.

He had been dragged from a storm drain where he was hiding before being shot in front of a baying mob. Rebel fighters described him begging for mercy.

Ousted Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been reported captured, and possibly killed, as his hometown of Sirte fell to revolutionary fighters, officials said Thursday. "We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Moammar Gadhafi has been killed," Jibril told a news conference in the capital Tripoli.

Al-Jazeera has aired images it says are of a dead Gadhafi, taken after his capture. The footage shows a man,who resembles Gadhafi bleeding from the head, CBC News could not verify the authenticity of the image. Someone named Abdel Majid Mlegta with the National Transitional Council told Reuters that Gaddafi was shot in the head. But the report is fuzzy:

A mobile phone picture, purporting to be that of wounded leader Muammar Gaddafi, was circulated shortly after the news of his capture broke.

It says Gaddafi was “captured” after he was found in a hole and said, “Don’t shoot, don’t shoot.” So perhaps he wasn’t persuasive at that point. Mahmoud Shammam, the chief spokesman of the National Transitional Council, the interim government that replaced Gadhafi's regime after he fled Tripoli in late August, confirmed that Gadhafi was killed, though he did not provide other details.

Gaddafi's body is with our unit in a car and we are taking the body to a secret place for security reasons," Mohamed Abdel Kafi, an NTC official in the city of Misrata, told Reuters. Gaddafi's last stronghold, Sirte, had earlier fallen to forces loyal to the NTC, which formed after the collapse of the Gaddafi's regime.

NATO officials, speaking on condition of anonymity in accordance to alliance rules, said the alliance also could not independently confirm whether Gadhafi was killed or captured. Gadhafi's capture was also reported by Libyan television, citing the Misrata Military Council.
